Do you ever wonder what are the things that every Christian should do?
If you want to know God’s will then you have to look at what He says in the Bible.
So in this article, we are going to look at some of the things that God wants us to do by searching the Scriptures.
There are several things that every Christian should do but today I’m sharing with you just 10 of those things.
But if you spend time reading and studying the Word, you will definitely see more things.
10 Things Every Christian Should Do
Let’s see what the Bible has to say about the things that every Christian should do.
I strongly believe that these 10 things should be done on a regular basis (daily or weekly) so make an effort to incorporate them into your life.
1) Love God
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
– Matthew 22:36-39 (NIV)
The most important thing that every Christian should do is love God.
That’s the greatest command that He has given us.
And He wants you to love Him fully with all your heart, soul and mind.
Are you living to please God, the world or yourself?
If you’re not sure, take some time to think about how you use your time, energy, resources and money.
That will help you to know where your true devotion and allegiance is.
2) Love and serve others
In Matthew 22:36-39, Jesus tells us that the second greatest command is to love our neighbors as ourselves.
This is definitely something that every Christian should do.
You can show love to others by being kind, respectful, loyal and forgiving.
Another way you can show love to others is by serving them.
Another word for “serve” is “help”. So you can show your love by helping others and meeting their needs.
Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.
-Titus 3:14 (NIV)
If you’re a Christian, God has given you at least one gift that you can use to serve others.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
– 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
Here are some ways you can serve/help others:
- Read the Bible to those who can’t read
- Teach a child how to read
- Encourage someone who is feeling sad or hopeless
- Run errands for someone like the elderly or sick
- Comb someone’s hair
- Bake or cook a meal for the elderly or sick
- Help to clean your church
- Help to organize at your church
- Drive someone to work/church/supermarket etc.
- Sing a song for someone who feels sad
- Help someone financially
3) Pray
Pray continually
– 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NIV)
One of the things that every Christian should definitely do is pray.
Prayer is talking to God and asking for His help and intervention. It also involves listening to Him.
Men ought always to pray, and not to faint
– Luke 18:1b
God wants us to have close fellowship with Him and one of the ways we do that is by talking to Him on a regular basis.
I want you to pay keen attention to this next statement:
If you want God’s will to be done on earth, you have to pray.

4) Live by the Word of God
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
– Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
When Jesus was on Earth, he told us that as human beings, we need more than just physical food. We need the Word of God.
The Word of God is vital for our survival.
And you can only live by the Word if you know the Word.
How do you get to know the Word? You have to read it, memorize it and study it.
When you take the time to memorize and study the Word, the Holy Spirit will bring it back to your memory when you need it the most.
This will help you to make wise decisions and to walk uprightly before the Lord.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

5) Give thanks
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
-1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
I know a lot of people want to know what God’s will is for their life.
You may even be one of those persons.
Well, in 1 Thessalonian 5, we clearly see that it’s God’s will for us to give thanks in all circumstances.
Yes, all circumstances. Not just when you’re happy or when God answers your prayer.
The truth is you can always find something to be thankful for even if you’re sad, depressed or anxious.
Start naming your blessings and thank God for each one.

6) Avoid sexual immorality
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
– 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NIV)
Did you know that it’s also God’s will for you to avoid sexual immorality?
Well, in 1 Thessalonians, it is clearly written that it’s God’s will for us to abstain from sexually immoral activities.
He wants us to learn to control our bodies in a way that is holy and honorable (1 Thessalonians 4:4).
Examples of sexual immorality are:
- Fornication
- Adultery
- Homosexuality
7) Share the gospel
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
– Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
The Great Commission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ.
And you do that by sharing the gospel.
The Gospel is the good news that even though we are sinners and we deserve to die, Jesus Christ died for our sins and freely gives eternal life to all those who believe in Him.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
– John 3:16 (NIV)
Peter also encourages us to be prepared to give an answer for the hope that we have in Christ.
So every Christian should be able and ready to share the gospel.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

8) Meet with other believers
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
– Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)
One thing that every Christian should do is meet regularly with other believers.
I know some people think that they can walk on this faith journey alone.
But God wants us to meet with other believers so we can encourage each other.
This may look like going to a physical church building. But it could also mean meeting in small groups to study the Word and pray together.
Fellowshipping with other believers will also help to provide accountability.
You may think that you are strong and that you can walk this faith journey alone. But there is strength in unity.
You’re more likely to give in to temptation when you’re alone.
That’s why it’s important to be a part of a church and to have Christian friends who will check up on you regularly.
They will encourage you and remind you why it’s important to keep trusting and obeying God.

9) Trust God at all times
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
-Psalm 62:8 (NIV)
One of the most important things that every Christian should do is trust God at all times.
I know it’s not always easy.
But it’s important that you put your confidence in God’s Word rather than human beings or yourself.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
– Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
If you want to please the Lord and walk uprightly before Him, you have to put your trust in Him.
In Hebrews 11:6, the Bible tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please God.
When we talk about faith, we are really talking about putting our trust in God.
It’s about believing that God is good and that He will work all things for good (Romans 8:28).

10) Forgive others
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
– Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
The last thing on this list is that every Christian should forgive others.
I know forgiving others is not always easy.
But what I want you to remember is that when you forgive someone, you’re not saying what they did was right.
You’re just choosing to release the anger, bitterness and desire to take vengeance into your own hands.
You have sinned and you done things that hurt God yet He forgave you.
And it’s in that light, that God is asking you to forgive others.
He is saying, I forgave you when you hurt Me. So do the same to others.
Takeaway
I want you to remember that this list is not exhaustive. There are other things that we are supposed to do as Christians.
But these things that you should be doing regularly whether you’re a new Christian or if you have been on this faith walk for a while.
You may want to keep this list close so you can have it as a reminder.
